To ensure that you have a healthy garden, a trimmer is used now and then. Through a trimmer, you can easily cut through grass and weed. Cordless models with different speeds allow you to vary the power for either cutting thicker weeds or extending battery life.A trimmer is a handy piece of equipment used mainly for farming purposes. Variable-speed controls provide different levels of power for different cutting conditions. Fast-loading spools let you insert new line and wind it without removing or taking apart the spool. This design also eliminates tangles in the line. Fixed-line heads allow for quick loading of pre-cut pieces of line without the need for winding. Automatic-feed heads release new line as needed. Bump heads feed trimming line from the spool when you tap the cutting head against the ground. Dual-line heads trim faster, cutting twice with each revolution. Single-line heads simplify winding new trimming line. Some models have guides or wheels to make achieving a clean edge easier. An edger-capable trimmer converts quickly from trimmer to edger while keeping the handles and controls comfortably oriented. Cutting swath indicates the cutting area of the trimmer. An adjustable shaft allows you to change the working height of the trimmer. A straight shaft trimmer can reach under obstacles, such as decks, shrubs and benches. A curved shaft trimmer is good for trimming in tight areas and can make the trimmer easier to control. Spring-assist starting makes gas trimmers easier to crank. They eliminate the need for mixing fuel but are heavier than comparable two-cycle engines and require regular oil changes. Four-cycle engines run on gasoline alone. You’ll need to mix the fuel yourself or purchase it pre-mixed. Two-cycle engines on gas trimmers offer a good balance of power and weight but run on a blend of oil and gasoline. The rating for volts on a cordless trimmer and cubic centimeters (cc) on a gas trimmer indicates power output. Split-shaft trimmer attachments, such as edgers, blowers, mowers and pole saws, allow your trimmer to do even more to keep your property pristine. Rotating heads let your trimmer do double duty as an edger. There’s also an array of attachments you can choose from for various models. With the proper maintenance, they’ll easily last more than a decade. They’re made for medium- to heavy-duty trimming and are great for large yards, tall grass, heavy weeds and even edging. Gas trimmers are the most flexible and can be refueled in seconds. It’s worth noting that brushless motors are more efficient, delivering more power and more run time per charge. Batteries tend to last three to five years. For larger jobs, a second battery will get you through. That said, battery run time usually tops out at 30 minutes, and recharging may take up to an hour. Low-voltage trimmers, 18 V to 36 V, are comparable to electric trimmers, while high-voltage trimmers, 40 V to 80 V, can outperform even two-cycle gas trimmers. Cordless trimmers free you from that limited extension cord range. Still, you’re limited by the extension cord, which only goes up to 150 feet. Lightweight, reliable, relatively quiet and maintenance free, they require no fuel, so there’s no fussing with fuel mixtures. Electric trimmers are ideal for small yards and simple trimming. Gas-powered weed trimmers are the most common, but electric trimmers and cordless trimmers are great alternatives.
